Sport and leisure facilities in Newport will start to reopen this month, as lockdown restrictions are eased.
Newport City Council and Newport Live are working together to prepare the city’s sports and leisure buildings for reopening, and many of the facilities in Newport Centre, the Newport International Sports Village (NISV) and Active Living Centre (ALC) will be available for use again from August 10.
This includes Newport Live’s three pools at NISV and ALC as well as expanded gyms, sports halls and group exercise areas in Newport Centre, according to a statement from Newport Live.
However, initial inspection work identified that further "urgent investigations" and maintenance work are required at Newport Centre so the swimming pool will remain closed for about six months while surveys are carried out.
Where possible, Newport Centre’s swimming programme will be incorporated into the swimming pools at the NISV and ALC.
Newport City Council leader Councillor Jane Mudd said: “I’m pleased that the council has been able to work with Newport Live so sports and leisure facilities operated by the trust can reopen and this will be welcomed by their many users. I know people will be disappointed that the pool in Newport Centre cannot reopen but people’s safety has to be our priority while detailed investigations are undertaken.”

Steve Ward, Newport Live’s chief executive, said: “We are naturally disappointed not to be able to reopen Newport Centre’s swimming pool later this month.
"However, it is imperative that further urveys are carried out and the pool closure is, therefore, unavoidable.
"We will do our utmost to accommodate as much of our Newport Centre swimming programme in our other pools as we can. We are looking forward to welcoming our customers back to our centres, and our other pools, from the 10 August.”
