Sporting News lists Colts as free agency losers for not spending

For Indianapolis Colts fans, it is no surprise that general manager Chris Ballard has been quiet to begin free agency this offseason, which has been his M.O. over the last five offseasons.

Even if we expected him to spend a little bit more in free agency, the Colts have stuck with this approach of not overspending on the market and building the majority of the roster through the NFL draft. But it still leaves some disappointed that the Colts don’t use all of that salary-cap space.

Among them is Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News, who listed the Colts as losers in free agency due to their lack of competitive spending.

Losers: Indianapolis Colts

While the rest of the AFC South has been making some signings, the Colts, despite some pursuits and having a good chunk of money under the salary cap, have been very quiet over the first two days-plus, both with in-house and outside free agents.

The Colts have had their share of interest in players on the market but we know that Ballard won’t go over the value they have on a player. They let the market dictate their price and if a team is willing to outbid them, Ballard isn’t going to lose any sleep over it.

Sure, it would have been nice to see the Colts go get an edge rusher or even grab a wide receiver like John Brown, but it seems Ballard has a different plan this offseason. That plan is likely to include the draft pretty heavily again.

The Colts will always be looked at as disappointments in free agency because of their lack of spending, but Ballard will continue to follow his process as long as he’s calling the shots in Indy.
