Sporting Lisbon boss' angry response to Cristiano Ronaldo question - "I've already answered"

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim has snapped after he was once again asked about links to Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese superstar, 37, is currently a free agent after reaching an agreement with Manchester United to terminate his deal six months early. Ronaldo, who started his career at Sporting, has been linked with a romantic return to Lisbon on more than one occasion this year after falling out of favour at Old Trafford.

In recent weeks, Ronaldo has been heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabian outfit Al Nassr in a deal that would see him pocket a staggering £173million-a-year. And although Ronaldo has stayed coy over his future, he is expected to make a decision following the conclusion of the World Cup.

Sporting Lisbon is still being touted as a potential destination, even though Amorim has talked down the chances of a move happening. When he was asked about Ronaldo again following Sporting's thumping 5-0 win over Braga earlier this week, Amorim snapped.

He retorted: "Ronaldo was in Qatar, they had the opportunity to ask him and they didn't. I've been asked 500 times and I already answered."

Other elite European clubs have distanced themselves from Ronaldo in recent months: Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have both ruled out making a move, while it is believed that there is no longer any interest in Ronaldo from Premier League clubs.

Although Ronaldo would prefer to join a club who can offer him Champions League football, he could be forced to soften his stance after a disappointing World Cup campaign.

The veteran forward failed to find the net during Portugal's run to the quarter-finals and even lost his spot in the team to Benfica hotshot Goncalo Ramos, who plundered a remarkable hat-trick after replacing Ronaldo in the Round of 16 triumph over Switzerland.

And with Al Nassr's staggering offer the only concrete proposal on the table, Ronaldo could be left with no option but to head to the Middle East after curtailing his second stint at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo's former Manchester United teammate Patrice Evra has suggested that Ronaldo could even decide to retire after he was seen leaving the pitch in tears after Portugal's World Cup exit.

The Frenchman told Sky Sports : “When I have talked to him I haven't spoken about what he is going to do next. We have been talking more about life and family. But I don't know [what he will do next]. Messi is saying he will retire [from the World Cup], but I don't know if Ronaldo will retire.

"Sometimes, when you are getting so much criticism, especially at the end of your career, you are like 'OK, I think it's time to stop'. That must be a feeling, especially when you are not in the starting XI of your national team, because that is what Cristiano wanted; to play, be fit and to win the World Cup with his country.

"This was his dream; now he doesn't have that dream. Although I won't talk for Cristiano, I wouldn't be surprised if he says he is retiring. Now everything Cristiano does he is a 'bad person', a 'bad player' or whatever. I wouldn't be surprised if he decides to retire."
