Sporting director delighted to wrap up deal for talented young Tottenham academy star

Tottenham Hotspur have made Danish club Viborg by allowing young goalkeeper Brandon Austin to remain on loan with them until the end of their season.

The 21-year-old Spurs academy product has had a season to remember, making six appearances on the Tottenham bench under both Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho in the Premier League and Champions League.

On top of that Austin was called up twice to the England U21 squad and then got his first minutes in competitive senior football by making the January switch to Danish second division side Viborg.

It's tough to find loan moves for 21-year-old goalkeepers that come with plenty of game time but the move to Denmark was perfect for all parties.

The young stopper started twice for his new club soon after signing before the pause button was pressed on football and he spent his lockdown period out in Denmark.

After playing for an hour in a midweek friendly at Hobro, which finished 1-1, Austin was back in action and starting in second-placed Viborg's 1-1 draw against Skive as the NordicBet League reopened on Friday.

With Skive leading in the game, Austin made a superb save to prevent the visitors from sealing their victory deep into stoppage time at the end of the game and that inspired his team-mate Alassana Jatta to score just seconds later at the other end to salvage a deserved point for the hard-working hosts.

Following the news that Spurs and Viborg had agreed a short contract extension, so the goalkeeper can stay in Denmark for the rest of the season, the Danish outfit's sporting director Jesper Fredberg was understandably a happy man.

"We are, of course, pleased that we have reached an agreement relatively quickly and that Tottenham has shown great understanding of the situation," he said.

"Brandon has got off to a great start in the club and we are very pleased that we have him for all the games that await the rest of the season."

With Michel Vorm's contract expiring again this summer after the Premier League season ends, Austin will be hoping that he can either battle with Alfie Whiteman to become Tottenham's third choice goalkeeper next season or head out on loan again to continue his development and further his experience of first team football.
