Sporting director claims Premier League season will be cancelled

An Italian sporting director, at a club owned by the people in charge at Watford, claims the Premier League season will be cancelled.

Pierpaolo Marino, who works for Udinese, reckons the English top flight is to follow the lead of the Belgium Jupiler League and be voided.

The Premier League is suspended indefinitely but the organisation has maintained in recent statements that they remain committed to finishing the season and the 20 clubs - including Watford - could lose a combined €1bn in lost TV money, sponsorships and gate receipts.

Watford, fourth bottom of the table, are owned by the Pozzo family who also run Serie A side Udinese.

And their sporting director Marino has been quoted by Sportitalia, and cited by the Watford Observer, says the Premier League will soon announce that the season is over.

“The Belgian Federation has already sanctioned the end of their league, despite the threats of sanctions from UEFA,” he is quoted as saying.

“In England, the Premier League is about to release a similar statement, because the situation there is becoming very, very serious.

"I frankly just hope we can enjoy football again after the coronavirus.

“It doesn’t matter how long it takes, we need to get out of this danger zone.

"I am worried for the next seasons, not the old one."
