Sporting activity 'to be given green light to resume' in Ireland on June 29

All sporting activity is to be given the green light to resume in Ireland on June 29, according to reports.

The Government is expected to make an official announcement later today after the Cabinet meet to discuss recommendations from the National Public Health Emergency.

RTE reports that all sports will be given the green light to resume on that date, but that most organisations might opt to not return to competitive action for some time.

Barbers and hairdressers may also get the go-ahead to open on June 29.

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) is to recommend the move to Government.

Originally planned for July 20, a positive decision would mean these businesses could start back up in just over 10 days' time.

With the R-rate of Covid-19 infection steady at 0.7, it appears another lockdown restriction is set to be moved forward a phase.

It is understood that easing restrictions earlier than planned around theatres, cinemas, gyms and larger social gatherings will also be discussed.

Professor Philip Nolan, Chair of the NPHET Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group, said on Thursday that it is "heartening to see that none of the data suggests that there is a significant increase of transmission of COVID-19 in the community since the commencement of Phase 2".
