Sport in Republic of Ireland might not return until August as mass gatherings ban extended

Sport in the Republic of Ireland might not return until Autumn as the Irish government confirmed that a ban on mass gatherings will be in place throughout the summer.

The GAA All-Ireland championships, League of Ireland, PRO14 rugby and a host of other sporting competitions now face renewed uncertainty as a result, reports the Irish Mirror.

The government this afternoon have confirmed that mass gatherings in the Republic will be banned until August at the earliest.

It's part of plans due to be announced by the Irish Government due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

It is believed that the decision was taken by Ministers at a cabinet meeting today.

The GAA, FAI and IRFU have all implemented complete shutdowns on all activities since March 12.

But the GAA were targeting a July return to stage makeshift All-Ireland championships after a Special Congress last week.

The FAI were also eying a July return for the League of Ireland while the Irish Rugby provinces' PRO14 and Champions Cup seasons remain in limbo.

But today's decision would mean that that all big concerts, sporting events and other events will have to be rescheduled.

It is believed that this will apply to gatherings of 5,000 people or over.
