Sport fans to be allowed to return to some matches after lockdown 2

There was good news for sports fans today (Monday) as the Prime Minster has confirmed a 'limited number' of spectators can return to venues.

But it's unlikely Bristol City or Rovers' supporters will be able to watch their beloved teams before Christmas, as the new rule only applies to areas in lower Tiers.

It's anticipated Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire will all be thrown into the 'tougher' Tier 3 next week.

Boris Johnson said he hopes' to inform each area by Thursday about which Tier they will enter after England's second lockdown finishes.

Only people living in Tiers 1 and 2 will be to return to sporting events.

He told the Commons: "In Tiers 1 and 2 spectator sports and business events will be free to resume inside and outside with capacity limits and social distancing, providing more consistency with indoor performances in theatres and concert halls.

"We'll also strengthen the enforcement ability of local authorities, including specially trained officers and new powers to close down premises that pose a risk to public health."

Mr Johnson also warned of a 'hard winter' ahead.

He said: “This will still be a hard winter. Christmas cannot be normal and there’s a long road to spring.

“But we have turned a corner and the escape route is in sight.

“We must hold out against the virus until testing and vaccines come to our rescue and reduce the need for restrictions.

“And everyone can help speed up the arrival of that moment by continuing to follow the rules getting tested and self-isolating when instructed, remembering ‘hands, face, space’ and pulling together for one final push to the spring when we have every reason to hope and believe the achievements of our scientists will finally lift the shadow of this virus.”
