'Spooky' glow over city leaves residents baffled but has simple explanation

A mysterious glow that lit up parts of Coventry this week, which left confused residents wondering about possible UFO s, has been explained.

According to Coventry Live, the strange fluorescent cloud, which was spotted by many in the Longford, Aldermans Green and Foleshill areas on Monday evening, had first appeared to be the work of aliens.

Many, like local resident Martin Garry, had noticed the ghostly gleams while out walking.

He said: "I noticed it while walking the dog in the park. I thought it looked a bit strange. I was curious, being an amateur astronomer, so I grabbed a picture."

He added: "I hadn’t seen anything like it before for sure. I did have mixed thoughts as it was by the stadium (Coventry Building Society Arena) but seemed a strange colour for the lights.

"So my thoughts went to a type of Northern Lights, which I've not seen before. Who knows, maybe the Lord was shining on the mighty Sky Blues, passing on divine intervention for last-minute goals and their journey to the promised land!"

The image, captured by Martin Garry, shows the lights coming from the Coventry Building Society Arena (Martin Garry, Bird in Hand)

But Adele Walsh, who was at the Arena Shopping Park, had noticed the lights and recognised the source appearing from the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Adele said: "I thought it looked quite spooky, but there was like drizzly rain too so the air was quite misty which made it look even brighter."

However, Coventry Live has revealed the mysterious glow was in fact not the work of aliens, but the work of the grounds team at the arena.

The "artificial sunlight" used on the arena pitch help to grow and repair the pitch after it is played on.

The lights were previously announced in a “joint investment” made by the club and rugby club Wasps in an “effort to keep the pitch healthy”.

Chief executive of the Football, Dave Boddy said: “We are jointly investing in another set of growing lights which, as you can see are on the pitch now, so there will be a second set of lights in situ and it will be very much a collaborative situation where we work very closely together.”

For now, it seems any visit from extraterrestrials in Coventry is unlikely - just yet.
