Spooks from Five Eyes alliance plan how to tackle hackers at CyberUK conference

Spy chiefs from the Five Eyes intelligence pact share a British stage for the first time today.

Some 2,500 experts take part in the National Cyber Security Centre’s annual CyberUK conference in Glasgow.

The opening session will see top spooks from the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand and Canada discuss tackling online attacks.

NCSC director-general Ciaran Martin said: “Cyber security is an international team sport, and we are delighted to host allies from around the world in this public way to discuss how we best defend from common adversaries.

“Cyber attacks do not respect international boundaries, and many of the threats and vulnerabilities we face are shared around the globe.

“Each nation has sovereignty to defend itself as it sees best fit, but it’s vital that we work closely with our allies to make the world as safe as possible.”

Last October it emerged agents were confronting at least 10 attacks a week.

Online NCSC spies were alerted to 1,100 web assaults in the squad’s first two years, it revealed.

Officials stripped the web of 138,398 phishing sites hosted in the UK in the past year, and 14,116 pretending to be British Government websites.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said last night: “The UK is one of the leading cyber powers in the world – but this is a global threat that needs a global response.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt backed the conference (PA)

“That’s why we are working closely with our allies across the globe to deter and tackle cyber threats, share information and respond in a coordinated way to impose a price on malicious cyber activity.”
