Spooks creator calls for show to make epic return and teases new storylines

The creator of hit BBC drama Spooks has called for a reboot of the spy thriller after nearly a decade off screen.

David Wolstencroft says the time is perfect to recreate the gritty series about MI5 operatives with a more diverse cast, written by a new team.

He said: “I would make a very big argument for bringing the show back even with a new younger writing team.

“I think we would have a greater racial diversity in the cast. I’d want more women writing and directing it – it was quite a male-heavy show. It’s the way everything fell at the time.”

Wolstencroft believes a new version of the show, which drew more than seven million viewers at the height of its popularity, would sit well with a modern audience.

“The stakes would be even higher. These characters would perhaps have more different allegiances and different expectations of what the Government could do.”

He told RadioTimes.com that he’d also like to take the action away from the capital.

“The stories would come from different places, and maybe would be outside London.”

The Bafta-winning series, which launched in 2002 and ran for 10 series until 2011, originally starred Keeley Hawes as Zoe Reynolds and Matthew McFadyen as Tom Quinn, neither of whom were killed off.

The pair got together during filming and later wed.

Other key cast included David Oyelowo, Hermione Norris, Nicola Walker and Peter Firth, who played the spies’ boss Harry Pearce.
