A SPOOF news website which takes swipes at celebrities, politicians and the media was sold today to a company poised to list in London.

Cult favourite The Daily Mash, which has a TV spin-off, left, has gained an audience in the decade since its inception by creating fake news stories, often based on current affairs. Recent headlines include “Jason Statham to try his hand at acting” and “Woman believes 83 Facebook friends actually give a toss about her birthday”.

The site has been sold for £1.2 million in cash and shares to Digitalbox, a digital media publishing business based in Bath. Digitalbox is set to float on AIM on February 28 through a reverse takeover of listed shell Polemos.

Digitalbox uses a specialist IT system to sell advertising slots around articles. The company owns TV and celebrity news site Entertainment Daily.

The sale will likely net a payday for The Daily Mash’s founders, Paul Stokes and Neil Rafferty.
