Spoof council sign asks people to 'keep their pubic areas safe'

We are all being asked to employ good hygiene practices to keep coronavirus at bay.

But it seems people in Bristol are being asked to go one step further.

Pictures of a message on the electronic sign in the city centre have been circulating on social media today.

And the message is urging people to take care of their more ‘intimate’ areas during the pandemic, as well as washing their hands.

Instead of the message urging people to keep ‘public areas safe’ the social media picture has dropped the L in the word public.

So instead it asks people to keep their 'pubic' areas safe.

Although keeping those areas clean is very important, many will be unsure of whether it actually helps reduce the spread of the virus in the wider community.

The sign also gives other advice, such as not touching your face, keeping your distance from other people and to follow social distancing guidelines.

People out shopping in the city centre have described the message on the electronic screen, opposite Cabot Circus, as an ‘unbelievable gaffe’ and ‘embarrassing.’

However all is not it seems.

Bristol City Council said it was aware of the picture circulating on social media and said it had checked to ensure its message was correct.

And it seems as if someone has been busy with Photoshop before posting the picture online.

Bristol City Council issued a tweet earlier to clarify the situation, admitting it had raised a smile at the authority during testing times.

In its tweet the authority said: "We care about public spaces…. And private ones too.

“Thank you to whoever photoshopped the pic of our sign, you’ve given us all a laugh.”

Government advice remains to still wash your hands for 20 seconds.

The washing of pubic areas still remains optional.
