Spoke & Stringer to open new restaurant and active clothing shop on Whiteladies Road

A former chicken shop in Bristol which has lay vacant since closing in February will be taken over by a new restaurant and active clothing shop.

Happy Bird, the ethical fried chicken concept that lasted 13 months, is going to be replaced with the second venture from a well-established brand which opened on the harbourside five years ago.

Spoke & Stringer opened on the Harbour Inlet in 2014, combining a shop stocking products from quality surf and cycling manufacturers, a café with a deli counter and a neighbouring restaurant serving ethically-soured food.

Its second site in the city, near to Clifton Down Shopping Centre, will be a scaled-down version of its multi-use waterside venue incorporating these three facets.

There will be a shop in the corner of the site, the layout of which has been drastically changed since Happy Bird's departure, along with a deli counter serving a range of ethically-sourced soups, salads, sandwiches.

Spoke & Stringer will also roll out its popular Healthy Minds food delivery service, which sees its nutritious food sent to offices around Bristol free of charge.

Operations manager Emma Linzel said: "We're really excited to open our second site. We wanted to open in a great area with high footfall and we feel like this is it.

"The shop will stock surf and cycling brands that are not sold anywhere else in the area who share our ethos, such as Pukas Surf.

"And the food will be a similar offering to what we do down at the Harbour Inlet, with a focus on fresh and healthy food which fuels an active lifestyle."

She added she's not concerned that Happy Bird only lasted 13 months as Spoke & Stringer will serve food throughout the day, including brunch, and should prove more favourable to nearby workers.

Spoke & Stringer's new site will launch a pre-cinema offer in the evenings, but the focus will mainly be on daytime trade.

With an emphasis on sustainability, the company works alongside Vegware and Close the Loop on all of its disposable packaging, which is made from compostable materials.

Food waste and used Vegware is then collected and turned into nutrient-rich compost for local farmers’ fields.

It is due to open in October and there are a number of vacancies to be filled including front-of-house staff and chefs.
