SPL season over as Liverpool given hint and Everton favourite relegated

The SPFL has opted to curtail the 2019/20 season amid the coronavirus pandemic, with Celtic declared champions and Hearts relegated from the top-flight.

In a board meeting on Monday, it was decided that the campaign would finish with points-per-game deciding the final standings.

The news has an impact on both halves of Merseyside, with Liverpool given a hint of what could occur if the Premier League is not completed.

Celtic have been handed the title, their ninth in a row, having sat 13 points clear of arch-rivals Rangers, who are managed by Reds' legend Steven Gerrard.

While there were some objections to the decision, it is a scenario that has already been seen in France's Ligue 1, where Paris Saint-Germain have been crowned champions.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, Hearts have been relegated for the second time since 2014 with a squad that includes former Everton striker and favourite Steven Naismith.

The Scotland international spent four years at Goodison Park, earning over 100 Premier League appearances before moving to Norwich City and then returning to Scottish football, where he is currently club captain for Hearts.
