Spitfire goes on display at London Bridge station for 75th anniversary of D-Day

A Spitfire aircraft was today unveiled at London Bridge Station to mark 75 years since the D-Day landings.

The replica Supermarine Spitfire took pride of place in the station’s concourse after being installed by the Imperial War Museum.

As well as being instrumental in the Battle of Britain in 1940 it also supported bombing raids during the Normandy invasion four years later.

The aircraft is usually kept at Duxford, in Cambridgeshire, which is Britain’s oldest surviving airfield.

The IWM has organised events in London and at Duxford to tell the story of the war.

HMS Belfast, which was one of the first warships to fire at the Normandy beaches, is also taking centre stage with activities planned for the anniversary weekend of June 8-9.

John Delaney, head of the Second World War at the museum, said: “It is such a thrill to display our replica Spitfire in London Bridge Station.

“This is an unprecedented and unique way to mark 75 years since D-Day.”
