Spirits giant Halewood's huge former North West HQ sold as firm moves to London

The massive former Merseyside HQ of spirits giant Halewood has been acquired by Network Space.

The 28-acre site in Huyton was bought for an undisclosed sum, and comes after it was closed by the firm last year after Covid had a "major impact" on its sales.

The Sovereign Distillery comprises 446,151 sq ft of industrial space and was the former headquarters and home of Halewood Artisanal Spirits PLC, whose core products include Whitley Neill and Liverpool Gin as well as Lambrini, vodka and ginger beer brands.

The family-owned producer of world-famous artisanal wines, spirits and beers which has operated from the site since 2000. Its HQ has now moved to London.

Network Space said on Tuesday it had successfully acquired the freehold of the site following a "competitive tendering process".

Halewood relocated a large proportion of its operation to Chorley last year but will continue to occupy half of the site for storage and distribution through a lease back arrangement in the short to medium term.

Richard Ainscough, group CEO of Network Space, said: “The acquisition of this high-profile, exceptionally well-located site provides a fantastic opportunity. We plan to maximise its potential through a part demolition, part refurbishment and part new build strategy.

“When finished, the site will provide small to mid-size urban logistics units, perfectly suited for e-commerce as well as regional distribution.”

Network Space intends to refurbish and redevelop the site to create a multi-let employment scheme to meet existing and future demand for industrial property.

B8RE and Gateley acted for Network Space, Savills acted for Halewood Artisanal Spirits PLC.
