'Spirited Meghan Markle did not surrender to role of Palace wife'

No matter which side you’re on, one simple truth is now clear.

All the things that made Meghan so brilliant – especially for women – are the exact reasons she was never going to be able to stay in the Royal Family.

It’s a cliche to call her a breath of fresh air in the staid institution but that’s what she was.

When she came on to the scene it was the first time many people – myself included – had any interest in the royals in years.

She was determined to do everything on her own terms.

I think she believed it was possible to satisfy the public interest, do their duty, but also stay true to who she and Harry were.

I love the revelation they exchanged vows secretly three days before their wedding.

Similarly, I cheered when Meghan and Harry refused to pose on the steps of the hospital after she gave birth.

Long term though, this strategy was not sustainable.

To be a successful royal wife, it seems you have to give yourself up to it.

Spirited women like Meghan always struggle with that.

Meghan and Harry’s interview was so many things – unprecedented, dramatic, upsetting – but hopefully it was cathartic for them.

Now, they can move on and be happy.
