Liverpool fans welcomed the players and their fellow supporters back to a near-capacity crowd at Anfield with a spine-tingling rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.
After an almost 18-month wait, large crowds finally returned to Anfield Road, with the club anthem feeling even more heartfelt than normal, following almost a year-and-a-half away.
Kick-off was delayed by 30 minutes, with Liverpool apologising for issues with the new ticketing system in operation, but the worries eased as supporters were finally given the opportunity to greet the squad ahead of the new season.
The Anfield crowd demonstrated what the players had missed out on last season, as chants were bellowed around the stadium.
Jurgen Klopp’s side started at an electric pace from kick-off, with Diogo Jota handing the team the lead on 13 minutes against Athletic Bilbao.
The game eventually finished in a 1-1 draw.
Fans will be hoping they can have the same effect throughout the upcoming season, having helped the Reds on their way to the 68-game home unbeaten run, which came to an end earlier this year.
The Reds remain unbeaten in their last 55 league games in front of an Anfield crowd.
Another set of supporters will be given the chance to show their appreciation to the team tomorrow, with Liverpool taking on Osasuna on Monday.
