Spike O'Sullivan still targeting world title shot as he aims for fight on Canelo vs Golovkin undercard

Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan insists his dream of becoming a world champion is still very much alive, despite undergoing an operation for two burst eardrums.

The Cork light-middleweight hopes to be included on the Canelo Alvarez versus Gennady Golovkin undercard in a world title eliminator later this year.

Mexico-born Alvarez and the Kazakh superstar are destined to meet for a third time, probably in September.

And O’Sullivan, whose four losses in his 34-bout career have been to former or current world champions, is planning to be fully fit for the call despite the coronavirus restrictions.

“All the gyms are closed,” he said. “I have the key to the boxing club, and I train by myself a couple of times a week.

“I bought a gym bike for the house. I usually wouldn’t work out in the house but, in the present circumstances, I bought the bike.

“I wasn’t doing too much training since the last fight. I had two-busted eardrums, and I had to take a break because of that. I was putting on a bit of weight.

“I went to New York for the screening of my film (Prizefighter). I was indulging in pizza and burgers, and all types of sh*te over there.”

The 35-year-old Leesider needed an operation on his ears after losing to unbeaten Mexican Jaime Munguia in San Antonio, Texas in January, Munguia winning on an 11th round TKO.

The Rebel County orthodox, however, asked enough questions of the Tijuana puncher, particularly in the middle rounds to impress the promoters.

“I think it (his next fight) could be in September, and it could be in the undercard of Triple G (Golovkin) and Canelo. I believe that is going to happen,” added O’Sullivan.

“I’ll be aiming for that. This is Canelo versus Triple G three. That would be a massive fight for me, a world title eliminator or possibly a world title shot.

“I’ll be ready, no doubt about that. Bring it on.”
