Spike in Bristol call outs to emergency air ambulance

There's been an eight per cent rise in the number of call outs to an air ambulance serving Bristol.

A spokesperson at Great Western Air Ambulance Charity said the biggest number of emergencies were cardiac arrests, closely followed by crashes on the road.

Bosses at the charity said in 2018 they received 637 call outs in Bristol, which is an eight per cent increase compared to 2017.

Despite its amazing life-saving work, the charity receive no day to day funding from the Government or National Lottery. This means it almost entirely relies on the generosity and support from communities to pay the charity's £4 million annual fees.

Former patient Chris Hickey, said: “GWAAC saved my life.

"I had a sudden cardiac arrest and without the intervention of the air ambulance, I wouldn’t be here today.

"You just never know when you might need the service and it can only keep going if it has the help of the whole community.

"Please give whatever you can so that someone else has the opportunity to have their life saved.”
