CROMWELL, Conn. _ Jordan Conyers will head into the weekend with the lead at the Travelers Championship midway point.
After a 1-under 69 on Friday, Spieth posted the low score of 8-under through 36 holes.
He's got plenty of work to do, however, as Patrick Reed and Troy Merritt are right on his heels at 7-under.
In a group at 6-under is Chase Seiffert, Wesley Bryan, Boo Weekley and Daniel Summerhays.
Checking in with the other big names, Rory McIlroy shot a 3-over 73 and is at even par and just made the cut. Jason Day shot 70 and is 2-over along with two-time champ Bubba Watson. Both are heading home.
Graham DeLaet, who had held the outright lead for a time at 9-under, fell back to the pack and sits at 5-under. He's joined by Jim Furyk, he of the record-setting 58, is also at 5-under.
Brett Stegmaier, who shot 2-over 72, earns the right to play the weekend and is at 4-under.
"I came out (Friday) trying to forget about (Thursday) and trying to make two birdies a side," he said. "It's tough. I made a double on a birdie hole. That throws you back a few shots. We rebounded nicely. Had an opportunity on the front to get to 10-under. That was our new goal. It fell just short, but in good position. For an off-day to shoot 1-under and hopefully that's the high score we post this week."
The predicted late afternoon thunderstorms held off Friday but the predicted weather has already caused change for Saturday.
Due to rain and thunderstorms in the forecast for Friday night and Saturday, third-round play will start at 11 a.m. with threesomes going off the first and 10th tee. The last groups are expected to start by 1 p.m. and finish by 6 p.m. The course gates will open to fans at 9 a.m.
