Spieth, Cantlay lead list of notables to miss cut at Genesis Scottish Open

While names such as Rory McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton, Tom Kim, Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa and Rickie Fowler are residing at or near the top of the leaderboard at the Genesis Scottish Open, there are several big names leaving The Renaissance Club early this week.

Adam Scott, for example, opened with a 2-over 72 on Thursday and dug himself too big of a hole. A second-round 3-under 67 wasn’t enough, and the Aussie is headed to Royal Liverpool a few days early.

Seventy-seven players made the weekend, with the cut coming in at 2-under 138.

Here are seven big-name players who missed the weekend at the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open.

It’s been an up-and-down month for the Aussie. After tying for ninth at the Memorial, Scott missed the cut at the U.S. Open. A week later, he tied for 19th at the Travelers Championship, but he’s once again headed home early after rounds of 72-67.

Ludvig Aberg (1 under)

After tying for fourth at last week’s John Deere Classic, Ludvig Aberg will miss his first cut as a professional thanks to rounds of 71-68 at the Scottish Open.

Patrick Cantlay (1 under)

After finishing fourth at this event last season, Cantlay is trunk slamming on a Friday thanks to an opening 2-over 72 followed by a 3-under 67. This is Cantlay’s first MC since the WM Phoenix Open in February.

Justin Rose (even)

The Englishman couldn’t get anything going at The Renaissance Club, posting two consecutive rounds of even-par 70. He’s now missed the weekend in back-to-back starts (U.S. Open). In 17 starts this season, Rose has five top-10 finishes.

Sungjae Im (even)

Im hasn’t finished inside the top 20 since the Wells Fargo Championship in May and has now missed the cut in four of his last seven starts. Like Rose, Im struggled to get going and shot consecutive rounds on even-par 70.

Matt Fitzpatrick (1 over)

Following a missed cut at the PGA Championship, Fitzpatrick rattled off three straight top-20 finishes. However, after rounds of 69-73, the Englishman is getting a few extra days of rest before the 151st Open.

Jordan Spieth (1 over)

Spieth has now missed the cut in four of his last five starts (he tied for fifth at the Memorial). The Texan usually thrives on links-style golf courses, but he wasn’t able to get anything going and fired rounds of 72-69.
