Spiders cover Greek coastline in silver webs

It is enough to make an arachnophobe scream.

An explosion in the population of spiders in the western Greek town of Aitoliko has covered more than 300 metres of coastline in thick, cloud-like webs.

Footage of the webs, captured by Giannis Giannakopoulos, shows bushes and large trees surrounded in the silvery substance.

Mr Giannokopoulous said the spectacle was "unique and points to a fairytale scenery".

Spider expert Maria Hatzaki, from the Democritus University of Thrace, told Greek media the webs were not unprecedented and were created by the tetragnatha spider.

She said favourable weather conditions and an abundance of food — in this case mosquitos — created ideal conditions for the spiders to mate.

Associate Professor Hatzaki said the spiders posed no threat.

"These are not spiders dangerous to humans," she said.

"This is not a phenomenon that will cause some damage to vegetation or anywhere else," she said.
