Spider-Man: Tom Holland's superhero will not return to MCU, says Sony boss

The “door is closed” on Spider-Man returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, claims Sony boss Toy Vinciquerra.

In August, news broke that Marvel would not be producing any further films with Tom Holland’s webslinger after Disney and Sony failed to come to an agreement on financing for the franchise.

Now Vinciquerra has told Variety that while there is “no ill will” between the two studios, “for the moment the door is closed” on Spider-Man’s involvement in the MCU.

He added that the superhero franchise will do “just fine” without Marvel. “Spider-Man was fine before the event movies, did better with the event movies, and now that we have our own universe, he will play off the other characters as well,’ said Vinciquerra. “I think we’re pretty capable of doing what we have to do here.”

There was a huge fan backlash when it was revealed that Disney and Sony had failed to make a deal on Spider-Man, with many even calling for a boycott of the latter.

The two studios were apparently unable to reach a financial agreement after Disney asked that any future films starring Tom Holland’s hero be a “50/50 co-financing arrangement” and Sony refused.
