Spider-Man returning to MCU after third film confirmed by Sony and Marvel

Marvel fans rejoice – Tom Holland's web slinger is returning to the MCU, after a third Spider-Man film was announced today.

Just when we thought the character was leaving the franchise for good, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Walt Disney Studios have announced the news of the superhero's return.

Spider-Man 3 will follow Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, forming part of the MCU’s Phase Four. It has a release date too, swinging into cinemas on July 16, 2021.

Spider-Man will also appear in another Marvel Studios movie at some point in the future as part of the new deal – although further details have yet to be released.

It’s huge news for fans of Tom Holland’s Spidey, whose role in the MCU seemed all but ended after Marvel and Sony failed to come to a new agreement over future films two months ago.

Swinging back into action: Tom Holland will return to the MCU

The new film will be released after the forthcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and before Thor: Love and Thunder.

"I am thrilled that Spidey's journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it," Marvel boss Kevin Feige said in a statement.

"Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold."

The news comes after Sony announced plans for a Spider-Man spin-off film based on the character Madame Web.
