Spider-Man: Miles Morales, PS5 reviews roundup: Critics hail ‘one of the best superhero games ever made’

The first reviews for Spider-Man: Miles Morales have been posted, and the verdict is overwhelmingly positive.

The superhero-themed sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man is one of the most hotly anticipated games of the year, arriving exclusively on the PlayStation 4 and PS5 consoles.

Miles Morales sees the role of the heroic webslinger passed to up-and-comer Miles Morales, who has trained under the original Spidey, Peter Parker.

Sony and developers Insomniac Games are also re-releasing the original Spider-man game – one of the PS4’s best-selling properties – with remastered next-gen graphics.

In a four-star review in The Guardian, Keith Stuart wrote: “Although Miles Morales is definitely more condensed than its predecessor, it is hugely enjoyable and even moving in its own right.

“The story isn’t massively innovative, but it is full of heart and genuinely engaging, and the action feels as enthralling and intuitive as it did in 2018’s Spider-Man.”

TechRadar’s Adam Vjestica wrote that Miles Morales “doesn’t quite reach the heady heights of 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the best superhero games ever made.”

In a review for Digital Spy, Owen Gough described the game as a “triumphant opening to the future of gaming”.

Kotaku’s Mike Sholars wrote: “Miles Morales plays, looks, and feels like the game it evolved from, but it has aims that are both bigger in theme and smaller in scope.”

“It takes a hard look at problems and stories that don’t involve punching, but ultimately becomes a Story About Punching.”

In a positive review for IGN, Jonathon Dornbush wrote: “Miles Morales earns its spot as a fantastic follow-up, telling a wonderful Miles-specific story while improving upon the fundamentals of the first game with distinctive moves and enemies.”
