Spider-Man: Far from Home breaks franchise record as it nets $1bn at box office

Spider-Man: Far from Home has become the first Spider-Man movie in history to gross over a billion dollars, eclipsing previous incarnations that starred Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, it this week reached a high of $333 million in the US and $672 million overseas, for a total of $1.005 billion.

It is also now the second highest-grossing film in Sony Pictures history, with only 2012’s Skyfall having grossed more. But that record may be in danger, too: Skyfall grossed $1.11 billion in total, which looks set to be beaten by Far from Home in the coming weeks.

In addition, it marks the first time a non-Disney studio has had a billion-dollar hit since last year’s Aquaman, which grossed $1.14 billion for Warner BrosThe first Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man movie, 2017’s Homecoming, grossed a total of $880 million worldwide.

It was claimed earlier this month that Disney would have reportedly lost the rights to the Spider-Man character if Far from Home did not cross the billion dollar barrier.
