Spider-Man deal reached between Disney and Sony Pictures as superhero to stay in MCU

Spider-Man fans are rejoicing as it was announced that the superhero will be staying in the MCU.

After it emerged that Spidey would be departing the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following a collapse in talks between MCU owners Walt Disney Studios and Spider-Man movie rights owners Sony Pictures, the two have now made a deal to keep the Tom Holland version of the character in the MCU.

As confirmed via Variety, Sony Pictures Entertainment and The Walt Disney Studios have together revealed that Marvel Studios and president Kevin Feige will produce the third solo film for the character with Holland reprising his role.

The film will also be produced by Sony producer Amy Pascal through Pascal Pictures.

Holland will also appear as the wall-crawler in an additional MCU film.

Kevin Feige said: "I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it.

"Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe.

"He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold."

Sony will continue to develop its Venom film series starring Tom Hardy, a Morbius film starring Oscar-winner Jared Leto, and other spin-offs.

The studio won an Academy Award earlier this year for its animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is set for a sequel and a spin-off film.

The third MCU Spider-Man film will continue on from Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Spider-Man 3 will be released in cinemas on July 16, 2021
