‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ (2026) marks a bright morning for Tom Holland’s friendly neighbourhood superheroes. From the promotional trailers, the film is distinctly different in its visual representation than the 'Home' trilogy. Yet, what makes 'Brand New Day' great is not in its departure from the others, but how it built on the legacy of the previous ones, including those of Maguire and Garfield.
The ‘Home’ trilogy and ‘The Avengers’ set us up with a technologically advanced Spider-Man who not only has a loving family and friends but was also guided and funded by the one and only Tony Stark. It was starkly different from the previous two iterations portrayed by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, whose Peter Parker makes Tom Holland’s version seem blessed and somewhat spoiled. Many fans felt he had it too easy.
This changed with the ending of ‘No Way Home’, where the world forgets Peter Parker, promising that Spider-Man will go back to the version we know of.
'Brand New Day' built off on that promise. What we have here is a Spider-Man who used to have loving friends, fought beside the Avengers, but now operates alone and fights crime on the street level. It is sweet to see Holland become the classic Spider-Man but also bitter to see him become isolated from his friends, especially in this version.
Nonetheless, it is not like Peter does not have anyone. There are abundant new and old characters in this film who help Peter on his missions. However, with the people he most valued in his personal life, Peter was afraid to get close for fear of bringing danger to them, as had happened before.
This film, since it came out, has been dubbed as the most emotionally mature Tom Holland Spider-Man film. I think this film greatly plays on its strength of 10 years' build-up and sees the characters grow on us since we first saw them in 2017.
Minor spoilers
The strength of 'Brand New Day', that said, is how its conflict and character were already built up from the previous three films. It also put a spin on the core motto of Spider-Man: “With great power comes great responsibility”, resolving it into the idea that responsibility also means not isolating yourself.
The Maguire and Garfield versions emphasize the heroism and sacrifice of personal gain for the greater good. In itself, this is an inspiring message. But I find the redefinition of this motto in 'Brand New Day' much needed at this time.
The film's ultimate lesson is that Peter can not isolate himself, as the mental burden obviously eats him up. Apart from the courage to do right, there is a need for the courage to ask for help as well. The great responsibility here, therefore, is not just the responsibility for your job, for others, but to yourself as well.
Spider-Man has been a role model on the silver screen since 2002. This new take on the web-slinger gives us a Spider-Man who looks and feels different, yet still feels like home. More importantly, it leaves audiences with a new lesson to carry away from their favourite superhero.
Accepting a helping hand can be heroic too.
