Spider-Man: Brand New Day earns one billion US dollars at box office in six days

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has made one billion US dollars (£742 million) at the global box office in six days, becoming the second-fastest film of all time to reach the milestone.

The blockbuster, which was released on July 31, is actor Tom Holland’s fourth outing as web-slinging hero Peter Parker.

It is beaten only by Avengers: Endgame, which earned 1.22 billion dollars (£906 million) at the box office in its opening weekend in 2019.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day made 355 million dollars (£263 million) in the US and Canada on its opening weekend and another 572 million dollars (£425 million) at the international box office.

China led the international ticket sales at 121 million dollars (£90 million).

The movie also set a record as the fastest film to earn 400 million dollars (£297 million) at the American box office after only four days.

Producer and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Variety: “I did not expect Endgame’s (domestic) record to be beat, but I couldn’t be happier that it was beat this past weekend by our 38th MCU movie.

“It’s overwhelming, frankly, to find ourselves in this position on a Monday morning — in the very best way.”

The film is the fourth release of this year to earn one billion dollars at the global box office after The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael and Toy Story 5.

Sir Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has made 922 million dollars (£684 million) since its release and is expected to become the fifth film to join the billion-dollar club soon.

2026 has produced the most billion-dollar films since the pandemic upended the film industry in 2020.

In 2019, a record nine films reached the milestone – but no year since then had more than three films earn a billion US dollars.

Sony Pictures spent 225 million dollars (£167 million) to make Spider-Man: Brand New Day, not including marketing costs.
