Spider expert explains what to do when you spot a daddy long legs inside your home

Now is the time of the year when people begin to spot spiders and other creepy crawlies making their way into their homes, and it seems for many 2021 is particularly bad for it.

One of these insects is the daddy long legs, which is often mistaken for a spider but in actuality is a type of crane fly.

Although this fact is unlikely to deter many from killing the bugs, one expert has urged the public to not harm them.

Director of reserves and community engagement at Warwickshire Wildlife Trust Karl Curtis has warned that daddy long legs are actually a very important part of the ecosystem.

He also stated that bug sprays in particular should not be used as the chemicals contained within them are very harmful to the environment, as reported by Cambridgeshire Live.

He said: "They are out this time of year because basically, they are hatching out of our lawns and various places - they live a lot of their lives underground as a grub, as a larva, and then what they do is they hatch out over the summer.

"Probably now is the last throw of the dice, and what they do is they come out and looking to mate, lay eggs back into vegetation and then they die off."

He continued: "They often get confused with spiders but they're not, they're flies, they're really good food source for birds, they're really important to play their part so people should let them out their windows and not kill them."
