The rumoured Spice Girls TV show for Netflix has reportedly nabbed a popular British comedian and writer to create the project.
Last year, it was reported that the journey of the iconic girls group - made up of Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Mel B, Mel C, and Ger Horner - will be dramatised in a tell-all biopic.
The project, from the makers of The Crown, was intended to made to mark 30 years since the release of their hit song, Wannabe, and expected to air sometime next year.
Sources are now claiming Netflix has recruited Bafta-winning Big Boys creator Jack Rooke to write the drama, amid rumours that the Spice Girls are planning a reunion world tour next year.
An insider told The Sun the reported booking is a “real coup” for the unconfirmed project and is a “crucial element” in getting the show made.
“He already has a relationship with Mel C, who’s a huge fan of his comedy Big Boys, and that could be the pivotal connection that takes things on to the next stage,” the source said.
They went on: “Of course, Netflix has yet to confirm it has commissioned the show and there’s still a lot to play for. But there now seems to be a genuine will to make things happen.
“No matter what Jack comes up with, it will be a loving and funny look at the band he grew up listening to in the Nineties and Noughties.”
Rooke won critical acclaim for his semi-autobiographical Channel 4 comedy, Big Boys, which he wrote and starred in. It ended with its third and final season last year.
In April, the 31-year-old confirmed he was working on a pilot for Netflix UK that he couldn’t reveal too much about.
“[It has] some of the hallmarks of Big Boys’ while perhaps leaning more on the drama-comedy, “ he hinted to Variety.
The Standard has contacted Netflix for comment.
The TV series rumours come after Beckham landed her own Netflix documentary series charting her reinvention from Spice Girl to a creative director of her own fashion and beauty brand.
The show will provide further access to the family and those close to them as well as featuring “never-before-seen” archive footage.
It follows the success of Beckham, the Netflix docuseries which followed the rise of her husband David Beckham from a young talented footballer to England captain.
