Millions of people attempted to purchase Spice Girls tickets when they went on sale yesterday (10 November), breaking Ticketmaster records.
At one point, there were allegedly 700,000 people in the digital queue waiting for a chance to purchase tickets.
“Demand for Spice Girls was off the chart,” Andrew Parsons, Ticketmaster’s managing director, said. “They have smashed through Ticketmaster UK’s records becoming the busiest ever sale.
“There were millions of people on our site searching for tickets, with a queue at one point of well over 700,000.”
Parsons says that hundreds of thousands of tickets were sold within minutes and commented that “they could have played nearly every night for a year.”
Demand for the tickets was so overwhelming that the Spice Girls added four shows to their run, including two in Manchester and two in London.
Four of the original girl group’s members – Geri Horner, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, and Emma Bunton – are returning for the tour, while Victoria Beckham has opted not to rejoin. They will be joined by special guest Jess Glynne at the shows.
Rumours about a possible tour had been swirling for years, with some of the group’s members giving increasingly strong hints over the past few months that plans to revive the 90s group were indeed in the pipeline.
