Spice Girls' Mel C says she doubts she would 'survive' if she rose to fame today

Spice Girls star Mel C has told how she wouldn’t be able to handle becoming famous today and wishes she had sought therapy as the group’s popularity grew.

The 47-year-old describes her relief at avoiding the spotlight in the social media age, admitting: “I don’t think I’d hack it, I don’t think I’d survive today.”

The singer has said that she feels for today’s youngsters “growing up exposed to so much more” as she prepares to take on a “maternal” role as a coach on The Voice Kids.

She said: “I’m one of the more mature coaches. I kind of feel maternal over everybody. I’ve always been like that even back in the day, back in the band, I looked after Baby Spice quite a lot.”

Speaking to Sink The Pink’s Pop-Tarts Instagram series, the star opened up how she wishes she had sought help as the Spice Girls rose to fame.

“I wish I had sought some kind of professional help to avoid some of the hurdles that were in the way.

“Even though we had each other, and us girls were experiencing the same things at the same time. But everybody deals with things differently,” she said.

The star added: “Becoming famous at a young age is a really hard thing to get your head around. I don’t think there’s enough support for young artists. Being thrust into the public eye does your head in,” she added.

Melanie C is set to join the Voice Kids, replacing Paloma Faith, who is taking maternity leave ahead of the birth of her second child with partner Leyman Lahcine.

The former Spice Girl has shared how excited she is to join the stars on the current coaching panel.

“Paloma is about to have a baby, so couldn’t fulfil her role this season.

So very kindly has lent me her chair and I just absolutely love it.

“We did some filming at the weekend, the kids are so amazing, so talented, so wonderful. I think we are in quite good hands moving forward. I feel like the future of the world is in good hands.” she said.

“Working with Pixie Lott, Danny Jones, Will.i.am, so lovely. So brilliant at what they do, I just immediately felt part of the family.”

On Melanie joining the show, longstanding Voice UK coach Will.i.am said: “A big welcome to Melanie C this year, also known as Sporty Spice. What do you think of the nickname Coach Spice?”
