Spice Girls celebrate 30th anniversary of Wannabe as reunion rumours swirl

Spice Girls released Wannabe 30 years ago - (PA)

The iconic Spice Girls have marked the 30th anniversary of their groundbreaking debut single, Wannabe, reflecting on how the track "changed our lives forever".

The 1990s pop phenomenon, comprising Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, and Geri Halliwell-Horner, swiftly ascended to the top of the charts following the 1996 release of Wannabe. The group went on to become one of the most successful girl bands of all time, securing nine UK number one singles.

Melanie Chisholm, known as Sporty Spice, shared her sentiments on Instagram, writing: "30 years of girl power, happy birthday Wannabe, I love you @emmaleebunton @victoriabeckham @officialmelb @gerihalliwellhorner @biffco, and Matt Rowe. The song that changed our lives forever."

Melanie Brown, or Scary Spice, posted the song’s memorable "zigazig ahhhh" line, adding a simple "yippee", while Emma Bunton, Baby Spice, echoed Chisholm’s message, telling her bandmates and fans: "Love you all, thank you."

Geri Halliwell-Horner, Ginger Spice, also paid tribute, stating: "30 Years of Wannabe – thank you to my beautiful spice sisters @victoriabeckham, @officialmelb, @melaniecmusic, @emmaleebunton, and thank you to the fans for joining us."

Looking ahead, Chisholm recently told the Press Association of her desire to celebrate the milestone with her bandmates, though the exact format remains undecided. She dismissed rumours of a Netflix documentary as "one of those curious news reports you see".

She further revealed that other ideas have been discussed, noting that the "milestone" of turning 50 has fostered a deeper appreciation among the members, leading them to "discussing things a lot more than we than we have done in the past".

Chisholm expressed optimism about future collaborations: "We’re in discussions, and we do want to mark the anniversary and, of course, we want to celebrate our incredible legacy, but it’s just finding the thing we all agree on that is the right thing to do, but I always remain very optimistic."

"We’re in such a good place as people and as friends, and I think that’s the most positive base we can be on," she added.

Beyond Wannabe, the group also achieved two UK number one albums and are celebrated for other hits including Say You’ll Be There, 2 Become 1, and Spice Up Your Life.
