Spice bag a new Easter Sunday favourite for Irish people

Irish punters are more likely to feast on a spice bag than roast lamb this Easter Sunday, a survey has revealed.

Customers in Dublin and Cork City in particular prefer to order in rather than cook a traditional Easter Sunday meal.

Takeaway orders were up a whopping 72% in Dublin and 67% in Cork City on Easter Sunday last year, food delivery website Just Eat Ireland has revealed.

Chinese has been voted as the cuisine of choice for traditional family gathering.

And 20% of those stuck in the office on Good Friday plan to order a Krispy Kreme sharer dozen.

Nearly a third said they will go to the local pub “for the novelty factor” following last year’s decision on lifting the ban on pubs on Good Friday.

Edel Kinane, commercial director of Just Eat, said: “The popularity of the Spice Bag on Easter Sunday certainly disrupts the traditional idea of an Easter Sunday dinner, but it is reflective of a continuous shift in more relaxed ordering habits which we’re seeing among consumers using the Just Eat app across the week.

“Despite this shift on Easter Sunday, we can see that ‘fish’ on Good Friday is still the most ordered dish, so perhaps Irish people are still keen to hold on to certain traditions.”
