SPFL task force's 14-14-16 league shake-up looks dead in the water over Premiership cash concerns

Plans for a new 14-14-16 league set-up look to be dead in the water because of clubs’ concerns over cash payments.

The reconstruction steering group is ready to put the financial figures on the table but the growing feeling within Scottish football is that the current set-up will remain unchanged.

Power brokers discussed the 14-14-16 proposal at length on Monday, which would see Lowland League winners Kelty Hearts and Highland League winners Brora Rangers promoted into the senior ranks.

The plan is likely to be scuppered due to the fact Premiership teams will each get less money with two more clubs in the top flight.

The big boys will be given the details tomorrow of how much of a cut they would have to swallow.

There will also be less cash further down the divisions when shared with the promoted minnows.

Plus, the SPFL is still looking for a title sponsor to bring in some much needed dosh and replace Ladbrokes whose deal ends in the summer.

Several senior clubs are already against 14-14-16 before the finances even come into play because they think it is unfair that both Kelty and Brora are allowed to come up out-with the pyramid set-up.

The 14-14-14 proposal, without adding any new teams, has also been discussed but it no longer has any momentum.

Another idea that has been tabled is a 14-20-10 but although that has support it is thought to be the less likely option.

There is a growing belief that within clubs that there won’t be an agreement to come out of the reconstruction group.

Even if there is, it looks unlikely to be voted through by the clubs, with many having too much to lose.

The feeling now is that many of the clubs believe the existing 12-10-10-10 set-up looks like their best option, with the pyramid being reopened again from next season.

Premiership teams are also divided over a whether to green-light a temporary 14-club top flight.

It’s understood that only five of the current 12 in that division voted for a short-term change at the last show of hands.
