SPFL should have given League Two clubs clarity on relegation before season resumed, says Rovers boss Brian Reid

Albion Rovers boss Brian Reid insists the SPFL should have told clubs if there would be relegation this season before games resumed last month.

And he admits he can understand why Brechin are seeking to have this year's pyramid play-offs scrapped.

When League Two resumed in March, Rovers were just a couple of points ahead of City at the bottom of the table, but Reid's men went on a five-game unbeaten run to all but secure their SPFL status.

Brechin remain rooted to the foot of the table and are destined to finish in the pyramid play-off position, which should see them face either Lowland champions Kelty Hearts or Highland winners Brora Rangers in a two-legged affair for a place in League Two.

However, this week Brechin chairman Ken Ferguson has pleaded with the SPFL not to go ahead with what they see as an "unfair" play-off given the shortened season, and the fact Kelty and Brora were declared champions on a point per game basis after their respective divisions were called last month.

Instead of promotion, Brechin have pleaded with the SPFL to forgo the play-offs and promote Kelty and Brora to a new 12-team bottom tier next season.

They are also looking for the Highland and Lowland champions next season to get promotion and invite Rangers and Celtic Colts into an expanded 16-team setup for 2022/23.

And Rovers boss Reid, who called for league reconstruction himself earlier this season, admits he understands where his league rivals are coming from he has blasted the SPFL for leaving clubs in limbo over how the season will play out.

The SPFL have yet to set a date for the pyramid play-offs as concerns grow that it will be binned for yet another season.

And Reid said: "If I'd been in Brechin's position I'd probably have felt the same way.

"We've managed to go on a good run and get out of that situation, but I never thought it was an ideal way of doing things before that.

"We've been ramming games in, two, three times a week, while other teams are sitting idle.

"I think this is something that should have been decided before we came back and started playing games again.

"That needed to be made clear - relegation, play-offs - before we came back, so everyone knew what lay ahead of them.

"Any competition, we should know where we are before we start playing games.

"I wasn't happy about that when we came back and I can see where Brechin are coming from, but it's out of my hands, I don't make the decisions."
