SPFL sent shutdown warning as Italy prediction proves 'too optimistic'

The Italian minister for sport has admitted that the plan to resume football by May 3 was "too optimistic", sending a warning to the SPFL.

Italy has been hit harder by the coronavirus than any country in Europe, and has been on total lockdown since March 9.

It was hoped that Serie A could resume in early May and finish by June 30.

That date was set out by UEFA as the deadline to complete domestic leagues, including the Scottish Premiership.

With the UK behind Italy in terms of the likely peak of the COVID-19 outbreak, Record Sport revealed that football may not resume until September.

And that has been given further credence as Italy confirms football will not be able to resume in the near future.

Minister for sport Vincenzo Spadafora said on RAI Radio: "I'm sorry to say it here, but the forecasts that led us to believe we could start again in late April or early May were, I think, too optimistic.

"I'm very doubtful about the May 3 date, if there was any chance of restarting we'd have to do it behind closed doors.

"Right now I have some doubts about the talk we can resume competitions. The scientists themselves have some uncertainty about how this will evolve.

"The final choice will be down to the federation (the FIGC, the Italian FA) but these optimistic predictions of starting again on May 3... it's unlikely it will resume.

"If the FIGC wanted to delay until July or August, well, that's down to the autonomy of the sporting bodies. It will depend on the other leagues too.

"The world of football took a little longer to understand the emergency we were facing. Now it will move with caution to avoid certain scenarios."
