SPFL reconstruction lifeline as Neil Doncaster indicates solution that has 'sufficient support'

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster has indicated to clubs that a 14-10-10-10 setup has 'sufficient support' to go to a ballot.

Following the early end of the season there have been protracted negotiations over reconstruction.

With the SPFL season ended early on a points-per-game basis Hearts, Partick Thistle and Stranraer all face relegation.

Jambos chief Ann Budge had pushed for a temporary solution but it's now apparent that won't get enough support to pass.

In addition, a proposal that would see an 18-team League Two with Rangers and Celtic colt teams looks to be off the table.

Instead Doncaster has received feedback from 41 of the 42 clubs indicating that a 14-10-10 setup has "sufficient support" to pass and that plan will be put to an indicative vote ahead of a potential EGM.

In a letter to clubs the chief executive indicated "there is no reasonable prospect of clubs approving a temporary reconstruction solution".

However, the SPFL chief executive said the consultation process had proved "there is sufficient support for a permanent 14-10-10-10 Divisional structure to merit this second stage of consultation".

That would see Hearts spared relegation from the Premiership, with Inverness joining them and Dundee United in the top flight for next season.

Stranraer and Thistle would also avoid relegation, with Kelty Hearts and Brora Rangers both promoted to League Two.

The distribution of SPFL money would be affected by the plans, which would see Premiership clubs give up some of their share for the two extra clubs in the division.

The remaining clubs would accommodate the two extra teams in League Two.

Those changes would see the top flight champions receive 0.38 per cent less in fee payments with the 12th-placed club taking a hit of 0.13 per cent.

The changes would mean a qualified resolution is required, so 11 of the 12 Premiership clubs have to back it as well as 17 or more Clubs from the Premiership and Championship combined and 32 or more SPFL clubs overall.

The proposals will now be put to an indicative vote and potentially an EGM, with ballots for the former to be returned by Monday.

Members have been assured that "how you vote at this consultation stage in no way prevents or affects your entitlement to vote in whatever manner your club chooses, on the final resolution, if and when it is brought forward".

Clubs are being asked to call an EGM within seven days in order to work out the fixtures for next season.
