SPFL receives financial shot in the arm as UEFA green lights £206m fighting fund

Scottish football has received a financial shot in the arm after UEFA announced the release of a £206m fighting fund to their member leagues.

Scottish football chiefs have received a huge boost with a £3.75m cheque boosting our 42 member clubs.

Teams in Scotland are in line for financial relief after the governing body used the HatTrick funding programme- usually used to assist specific goal or targets - during this time of need with clubs facing the financial strain amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

SPFL member clubs made the decision to call time on the 19/20 season below the top flight already in a bid to combat potential financial hardship.

And now UEFA chief Aleksander Čeferin believes the financial boost will help the beautiful game play a pivotal role over the coming months and years.

He said: “Our sport is facing an unprecedented challenge brought about by the COVID-19 crisis. UEFA wants to help its members to respond in ways that are appropriate to their specific circumstances.

"As a result, we have agreed that up to £3.75m per association, paid for the remainder of this season and next, as well as part of the investment funding, can be used as our members see fit to rebuild the football community.

“I believe this is a responsible decision to help as much as we can; and I am proud of the unity that football is showing throughout this crisis.

"Without doubt, football will be at the heart of life returning to normal. When that time comes, football must be ready to answer that call. “

UEFA have yet to make a final decision on top flight football this season with Celtic currently 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership.
