SPFL receive fresh empty stadium warning as France's latest stringent measures paint bleak picture for football

The debate over whether to end the Scottish football season early continues to rumble on.

Dundee are yet to cast their deciding vote on whether the lower leagues of the SPFL will be finished as they are.

That resolution would also provide the power to end the Premiership at a later date and declare Celtic champions.

Many clubs are keen for the current season to be ended to they can receive prize money, but there are also concerns over next season.

It was reported yesterday that fans will not be allowed at Italian football matches until 2021, a move which if replicated in Scotland could have dire financial consequences.

Scottish clubs get a disproportionate amount of their revenue from gate receipts, with Premiership clubs pulling in 40 per cent from ticket sales compared to just 10 per cent in Serie A.

Any long-term ban on public gatherings could hit clubs hard, and new measures announced in France point to that possibility.

On Monday evening president Emmanuel Macron announced: "Public gatherings, restaurants, cafes and hotels, cinemas, theatres, halls and museums will remain closed at this stage.

The big festivals and events with a big audience will not be able to occur until, at the earliest, mid-July."

France has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, with over 14,000 deaths so far.

In the UK COVID-19 has claimed more than 10,000 lives and it's likely similar measures will be adopted when the current lockdown is lifted.
