SPFL issue update after clubs vote on proposals to end league campaigns now

Proposals to end three of Scotland's football leagues now – with final positions based on an average points per match system – remain up in the air.

While a decision on the Premiership will be made later this month, the SPFL this week asked clubs to vote on whether the Championship, League One and League Two should be concluded now due to the Scottish football shutdown.

And this evening it has been confirmed that enough Scottish Premiership clubs had voted in favour, along with Ladbrokes League One and League Two clubs.

As only nine of ten Championship clubs have voted – seven in favour and two against – a final decision is yet to be reached. Eight supporting votes are needed from the second-tier for the proposal to pass.

The SPFL say that with three clubs still to vote, further updates will be provided when they are in a better position to do so.

A spokesman said: “It is very important that clubs consider carefully the resolution and we are grateful to those clubs who have voted already.

“With the Ladbrokes Premiership and Ladbrokes Leagues 1 and 2 divisions each having approved the resolution, we await the voting slip from the one Ladbrokes Championship club that has yet to vote. We will provide an update as soon as we are in a position to do so.”

Hearts indicated earlier this week that they would be rejecting the proposal, while issuing a fresh call for league reconstruction talks.

In a statement Ann Budge expressed frustration that all 42 clubs weren't given the opportunity and time to "discuss the situation fully" adding that "we now find ourselves once again in apparent disarray".

Hibs confirmed on Friday that they had voted to support the resolution – despite it meaning they'd drop down one place if the same measures were applied to the top flight.

In a club statement they said that while they had sympathy with those who'd be detrimentally affected, there was no "silver bullet" and "no genuine realistic prospect of bringing this season to a conclusion by playing eight rounds of matches without potentially creating a massive disruption to next season as well as this season".

They added: "The top priority for Hibernian throughout this crisis has been the welfare of its people, supporters, and the wider community. Whilst Hibernian, like every club, would rather the season could be played to a conclusion, all the available evidence suggests there is no prospect of an imminent return to training or safely playing matches. In that context we believe the SPFL resolution is the 'least worst' available option open to our national sport."
