SPFL green light FIVE substitutions plan ahead of Scottish Premiership kick-off

Scottish clubs will now be able to field five substitutes per game after the SPFL passed new rules.

The written resolution for Scottish Premiership matches for the 2020/21 season was backed by the top flight clubs ahead of the opening weekend.

Teams can now name a bench of up to nine players. They are only allowed three breaks in play to make their five changes during a match.

In a statement, the SPFL claim this is a "temporary alteration for the 2020/21 season" and "is designed to help clubs deal with a more congested than usual fixture calendar which may see reduced recovery time for players."

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster confirmed plans were moving forward for the system to additionally be rolled out in the lower leagues.

He said: “As excitement builds ahead of the return to competitive action this weekend, I am pleased that the Premiership clubs have approved this resolution which was recommended by the board.

"Player welfare was at the forefront of our decision to recommend this change and it is vital that we recognise the additional strain being placed on players as we embark on the 2020/21 season."
