SPFL get go-ahead for clubs to return to full training in major step forward to football's return

Scottish football clubs can return to contact training on Monday after the SPFL were given the go-ahead by the Scottish Government.

Clubs have been awaiting the news on when they can do full training after being allowed to return in small groups earlier this month.

Players such as Kilmarnock's Gary Dicker had been tweeting their frustration at only being able to train in groups of two but now all teams will be able to return to full training in preparation for the new campaign.

A statement from the Joint Response Group said: “The JRG can now confirm that ministers have formally approved full contact training for Scottish Premiership clubs from tomorrow, Monday 29 June.

"We would therefore encourage clubs to inform all Team Staff as soon as possible to facilitate the updated guidance & clarify that the approval for full contact training is inclusive of all Phase 4 requirements outlined in the JRG Return to Training protocols reissued on Friday."

Premiership clubs have been doing their early pre-season fitness work with strict social distancing guidelines and regular COVID-19 tests in place.

The new season won't kick off until August 1 with fans set to be on the outside looking in to begin with.

Livingston are one of two clubs who aren’t back in training yet but are expected to start back at the Tony Macaroni Arena on Monday when they’ll be allowed to get back into full contact action.

The other club yet to return are Hamilton Accies and they aren’t going to be back in action until July.

Clubs outside of the top flight are still not allowed to return to training, meaning the likes of recently relegated Hearts still have to wait until they get the green light to get back down to business.

Celtic and Ross County were the first two clubs to return on June 11 while Rangers, Aberdeen, Motherwell and Hibs all soon followed.
