SPFL face Rangers post-split away fixture nightmare as league juggle final round of matches

The Scottish Premiership top six is set to cause a nightmare for the SPFL, as two teams will be forced to make a third trip to Ibrox.

We told on Monday how the current make-up of the top six will leave Celtic a run of home games to end the season.

If the two home and two away format were to be followed, they'd end with five at Celtic Park while their city rivals would be on the road for the final five fixtures.

As things stand though it's guaranteed that Rangers will be granted a third home tie against two of their top six rivals.

Privately SPFL bosses may be hoping that there isn't a spark in the title race, as the Gers facing two of the division's strongest teams on home soil three times would be bound to cause controversy.

The other five teams in the top six are currently Celtic, Aberdeen, Motherwell, Livingston and Hibs.

By the time of the split Steven Gerrard's side have played ALL of those teams at home twice already.

The governing body attempts to ensure that each team has 19 home games and 19 away, but because of the split teams can often end up with an 18-20 divide.

Under SPFL rules, each team must have at least two home games after the split so as things stand it's guaranteed the Gers will face two of the top six at Ibrox for the third time.

The SPFL has never allowed either of the Old Firm to play 20 home or away games so they'll be away from home three times.

The league body also tries to balance post-split fixtures across the season to ensure teams don't face three away games for two seasons in a row.

Rangers had three home games in a row after the split last season while Celtic were away three times, meaning that situation should be reversed this time around.

It's probably safe to assume that they won't be given a third home game against Celtic, so they'll have to tackle a trip to Parkhead plus potential games away at Pittodrie and Easter Road.

The scheduling could also cause controversy if Gerrard's men close the gap and reopen the title race before the split.

The SPFL will want to avoid the possibility of the title being decided in a head-to-head clash at Celtic Park, so figuring out exactly where to place that fixture could prove tricky.

The nightmare scenario could yet change, with Kilmarnock and St Johnstone still in with a chance of making the top six.

Killie would be due a trip to Ibrox, having played Rangers twice at Rugby Park, and Tommy Wright's side will have hosted them in Perth twice by the time of the split.
