SPFL condemn Rangers over Cinch snub as chairman pens letter slamming 'very disappointing' Ibrox move

SPFL chairman Murdoch McLennan has penned an open letter to clubs slamming Rangers for their decision not to advertise title sponsor Cinch at Ibrox on Saturday.

Car dealer Cinch agreed a record-breaking sponsorship deal with the league in the summer that saw them take over naming rights from Ladbrokes.

The deal is worth a reported £1.6m per season to Scottish football, and 11 of the 12 Premiership clubs displayed Cinch branding on their shirt sleeves.

But Rangers, whose chairman Douglas Park owns another car company, did not.

And the Cinch brand was nowhere to be seen around Ibrox as Rangers kicked off their title defence with a 3-0 win over Livingston.

It was a divisive move from the Ibrox side and now McLennan has sent an email to every SPFL club condemning Rangers' decision.

“Dear all. You will all be aware that earlier this summer, the SPFL signed a title sponsorship contract with cinch.

“This contract is, by value, the biggest single sponsorship deal in the 131-year history of the league.

“In the context of what is, by any measure, a challenging economic environment, our Chief Executive and his commercial team deserve huge credit for delivering this deal.

“It is therefore very disappointing that one of our clubs has not felt able to deliver inventory to cinch.

“Your board will be discussing this situation later this week. I will of course be in touch thereafter to give you a further update.”
