SPFL clubs ramp up coronavirus testing after St Mirren record positive COVID-19 tests

Scottish Premiership clubs will return to twice-weekly coronavirus testing after seven St Mirren staff members were confirmed to have COVID-19.

It emerged this evening that players and staff at the Paisley club have been forced into lockdown as a result. This will be until further tests are carried out.

No players are said to have tested for the virus, but the weekend's friendly match with St Johnstone has been cancelled as staff are affected.

Prior to the outbreak clubs had been required to test players and staff once a week, however this will return to being twice weekly due to the outbreak.

A statement from Scottish football's joint response group said: "We immediately contacted the Scottish government and the office of the clinical director for Scotland to relay this information.

"In light of this and other recent events, the JRG hereby notifies Scottish Premiership clubs that with immediate effect they must revert to twice-weekly testing protocols until further notice."
