Spennymoor crash: Everything we know about the fatal collision so far

An investigation is under way after a teenager was killed during a police chase in County Durham.

Emergency services were called to Hawthorn Road, Middlestone Moor, following a collision during a police pursuit on Friday afternoon.

The driver of the vehicle, who has yet to be named, suffered fatal injuries.

Police have cordoned off Central Drive with forensics and crime scene investigators now descending on the scene.

What has happened?

A teenager has died following a police pursuit in Spennymoor.

Officers were following a Nissan Primera in the area until a car crashed into a wall.

The air ambulance was dispatched at 2.44pm while the North East Ambulance Service sent two ambulances, a Hazardous Area Response Team and a rapid response vehicle to the scene.

However, the driver of the vehicle suffered fatal injuries.

Where did the incident happen?

Police had been in pursuit of the Nissan in the Spennymoor area until the car crashed into a wall of a residential property on Central Drive in Middlestone Moor.

Who is the victim?

It has been confirmed that the victim is a 19-year-old man. Police have said they will not be revealing his identity at this stage.

Has anyone been arrested?

At this stage, no arrests have been made. The incident has been referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

What have the police said?

A Durham Constabulary spokesman said: "At around 2:30pm today, officers from Durham Constabulary commenced a vehicle pursuit in the Spennymoor area involving a Nissan Primera.

"Following a brief pursuit, the incident ended in a collision in Central Drive, Middlestone Moor.

"The driver of the vehicle, who is not being named at this stage, suffered fatal injuries.

"We have referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC)."

What have the ambulance service said?

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We received a call at 2.36pm to a road traffic collision on Hawthorn Road in Middleton Moor.

"We sent to ambulances, a Hazardous Area Response Team and a rapid response vehicle to the scene."

Is the area still closed off?

There is a cordon in place on Central Drive as the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) conduct their investigations.

Forensics and crime scene investigators are visible at the scene carrying out post incident procedures and gathering evidence

Up to 40 police officers are still visible in the area with the a fire crew providing lighting assistance so inquiries can continue into the night.
